Boys vs Girls

In what position are we to doubt a doctor's conclusion? My obstetrician clearly congratulated me on having a baby girl after a precise ultrasound scan last December. I was delighted. Mr Li & I decided on the name Jamie and told everyone the good news. Till today, I still have my parents & relatives telling me they somehow feel that I will have a boy.

How and why? I often ask... It appears that they judge by the shape of my belly and appearance. At times I'll be nice and say, "Oh really, that's amazing how you can tell. But the gender doesn't bother me."

However, I find it fairly disturbing that they would rather speculate than to face the fact. Is it the traditional Chinese preference for boys over girls? Is it because boys can carry on the family name? And the family will continue to multiply as long as baby boys keep on coming. I pointed out that they should suppress this historical gender discrimination in their subconscious and never let me hear a word about it or I'll be in rage.

Uncle Chuan joked, "Maybe the doctor only aga-aga see the monitor and tell you is a girl. The screen so dark... right?!"

Dad added, "You know ar, when your auntie pregnant that time the doc also say it's a girl. How come turn out to be Noah?"

Me: ".... ...."

"Equal" is not always synonymous with "the same". Men and women are created equal, but boys and girls are not born the same. Girls grow up and turn into women. Boys just turn into bigger boys. Muahahaha~!!
